This past Sunday for father’s day I visited New Orleans with my sons Brandon and Niko, my brother Tony and his son Derek. We decided to undertake the ambitious task of visiting thirty places in one day that are in New Orleans and on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally it seemed as though the task of seeing all thirty in a day would be possible it wouldn’t be easy. As it turns out we managed to get to fourteen of the thirty and several of those were a glancing moment.

The day was a blistering hot one even for south Louisiana and eventually the heat and humidity took its toll on us all eventually slowing down our pace and finally driving us into a small pizzeria to cool down. Once cooled our day was over as none of us had the desire to continue with full bellies and the heat reaching its mid-afternoon peak.

Today’s image is of the first location we visited on Father’s Day; the General Laundry Building on St. Peter Street. Opened in about 1929 and closed I have no idea when the General Laundry building’s fronting and first ten or twelve feet into the building are on the National Register of Historic Places and the rest of the building is occupied by a scrap metal business.

Done in an Aztec Art Deco motif the building is completely out of place for New Orleans yet fits in for that very reason. Now in a state of disrepair and no longer maintained the bright colors and myriad of shapes remains bright and eye catching even if becoming overgrown. The General Laundry Building is tucked into an area hard hit by Hurricane Katrina but only lightly flooded and the building sits in a run down area of town where even the government housing has been either torn down or barricaded.

Despite being a bit out of the way and in a questionable part of a city it made for an interesting out-of-the-way opening for out outing.

  1. FYI it’s on St. Peter not St. Charles.

  2. Yes it is on St Peter Street. Thanks for the catch on that, Kevin.
