Brandi Kissing a Cast Member of "Zumanity"

Brandi Kissing a Cast Member of "Zumanity"

It started so simple. I asked my daughter, “If you could go anywhere within reason where would you want to go?” and her response was almost word for word, “I want to go to Las Vegas for New Year, stay drunk and dress slutty!”

This picture was taken on New Year’s Eve night inside the New York New York casino after we saw the show, “Zumanity”. Brandi and I sat not in the first row but in front of the first row in a sofa and as we sipped on Henessy on the rocks with a twist and watched the show without obstruction. So close were we to the action we could literally smell the perfume on the dancers and feel the wisp of breeze as they ran by us. Brandi, with Hennessy and rose in hand, captured one of the cast members and planted a big kiss on his right cheek after the show.

This is one of my favorite spur of the moment candid snapshots. The drink and rose in hand, eyes closed at the perfect moment, the performer’s genuine smile, the lipstick lips on his left cheek and the two subjects genuinely having a good time all add up to a great candid shot.

This was the very last shot captured with a Nikon point-and-shoot camera. Just after this picture was taken I went to hand the camera to Brandi and we fumbled the exchange and the camera literally bounced off the tiled floor never to work again. It remains to this day the only time I’ve ever dropped a camera (though I’ve come very close on several occasions) and thus the only time I’ve ever destroyed one. I suppose it could be said this picture was literally that camera’s “kiss of death”.

The upside, however, is the time we spent together and the adventure of the trip we shared brought Brandi and I close to each other like never before. The cost of the trip and the cost of a camera compared to what I got out of it remains about the best bargain I’ve ever had.
